Abstract
Motor vehicle workshop wastewater has the potential to pollute the environment due to the presence of heavy metals such as lead (Pb) and copper (Cu), which are toxic and accumulative in nature. One environmentally friendly alternative for wastewater treatment is the utilization of natural bioadsorbents, such as kepok banana peels. This study aimed to determine the initial conditions of pH, Pb, and Cu in workshop wastewater, analyze the effectiveness of kepok banana peel as a bioadsorbent, and evaluate the effect of adsorbent mass variation on pH changes and heavy metal adsorption efficiency. This research employed a laboratory experimental method with a descriptive quantitative approach. The bioadsorbent was prepared through dehydration, carbonization at 150°C, and chemical activation using a 3% NaOH solution. The adsorption test was conducted using adsorbent dosages of 10 grams, 15 grams, and 20 grams in 500 mL of workshop wastewater samples. The analyzed parameters included pH, lead (Pb), and copper (Cu) concentrations before and after treatment. The results showed that the initial pH value of 6.72 increased to 8.48–8.62 after treatment using the bioadsorbent. The initial concentrations of Pb at <0.024 mg/L and Cu at <0.007 mg/L did not decrease in all adsorbent dosage variations. Therefore, kepok banana peel bioadsorbent was effective in increasing the pH of wastewater, but it was not effective in reducing Pb and Cu concentrations. This condition was presumably caused by the low initial concentration of heavy metals in the samples, resulting in the adsorption process not occurring optimally.
